The Melbourne School of Literature

MSL x SRB: CRITICS STUDIO

The Melbourne School of Literature is proud to partner with the Sydney Review of Books to offer CRITICS STUDIO, a dedicated space for the focussed study of and experimentation with longform literary criticism.

Join us for the pilot program of CRITICS STUDIO, which will run in-person in Melbourne on the afternoon of 16 May. We are delighted to invite participants to submit a short EOI (see below), by 11 May. These spots are available at no cost to participants, but as places are very limited, do express interest soon!

WHO YOU ARE

Someone in an early to mid-career phase of writing criticism who is interested in experimental and engaging approaches to critical writing.

WHO WE ARE

Formed during the summer of 2021/22, the Melbourne School of Literature is letting go of the neoliberal university’s demand for ‘knowledge’ and holding on to the desire to read and write, producing our own knowledge in the process.

Founded in 2013 in response to the diminishing space for criticism in the mainstream media, the Sydney Review of Books is Australia’s leading journal for longform literary criticism.

The Studio will be convened by SRB Editor and critic, Dr James Jiang.

WHAT WILL TAKE SHAPE

No practiced poses in the pas de trois!

Taking inspiration from the choreographic as much as the literary arts, CRITICS STUDIO invites participants to expand their conceptual and stylistic repertoires in a ‘live’ space. Through a series of focused readings and writing exercises, participants will be given the opportunity to break down their practiced poses and evolve new critical personae – pas de trois, optional.
